| Push Factors | traits that "push" people out of their home and make them want to move (war, poverty, persecution, environmental disaster) |
| Pull Factors | traits that "pull" people towards another country to make them want to move there (jobs, safety, freedom, family reunification) |

| Voluntary Migration | movement of people who choose to move (economic migrants, chain migration) |
| Forced Migration | movement of people who have no choice but to move (refugees, internally displaced persons, slavery, trail of tears) |

| Intervening Opportunities | positive features that can persuade migrants to settle (closer place, meets needs) |
