| mother lode | the main source of all California gold; a big amount of gold found in one place |
| prospectors | people who look for gold or other valuable things |
| panning | a way to find gold by washing dirt in a flat pan |
| swindler | a person who tricks others to take their things or money |
| placer gold | losegold found in rivers or streams |
| pyrite | a yellow shiny mineral that looks like gold but it is not |
| overlanders | people who traveled a long way on land, usually in a wagon train |
| boomtowns | towns that grow quickly because people find gold or other valuable things there |
| seize | to grab tightly |
| nugget | a small, chunky piece of something |
