| poetry | words chosen and arranged to inspire the imagination |
| literal | words used exactly according to their accepted meanings |
| figurative | opposite of literal |
| imagery | refers to the visual content of language--a mental picture that appeals to our senses |
| line-break | point at which the author ends one line and starts another |
| stanza | group or sequence of lines arranged in a pattern (sometimes looks similar to a paragraph in a piece of prose writing) |
| simile | comparison of one thing to another using like or as, e.g. Your mind is like a computer |
| adverb | word used to describe a verb, adjective, or other adverb, e.g. run quickly, write slowly |
| graph (Gk) | Definition: write Derivatives: autograph, seismograph, graphic, choreography, graffiti, bibliography, photograph |
| duct (L) | Definition: lead Derivatives: educate, aqueduct, conductor, reduce, product, introduce, conducive, induction |
