| grapheme | letter or combination of letters used to represent a phoneme |
| common adjective | word used to describe a noun or pronoun, e.g. tall tree, loud dog, fast swimmer |
| proper adjective | proper noun that behaves like an adjective, e.g. Seattle waterfront, New York accent, Irish oatmeal |
| sentence parts | bigger units of language in a sentence, e.g. subject, predicate, direct object, prepositional phrase |
| parts of speech | the specific roles a word can play in a sentence, e.g. noun, verb, adjective |
| log (Gk) | Definition: word, study Derivatives: biology, chronology, etymology, musicology, anthropology, geology, mythology, logic, catalog, prologue |
