TermDefinition
Romance languages languages derived from vulgar Latin, e.g. Italian, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Romanian
lingua franca language used for communication between people who have different native languages
mutually intelligible when speakers of different (but related) languages can understand one another
word order order of the subject - verb - object in a sentence
action verb word used to express action in a sentence, e.g. Ruby throws the cake.
linking verb word used to show a state of being in a sentence, e.g. Robert is happy.
transitive verb action verb that requires a direct object in a sentence, e.g. Ruby throws the cake (D.O.)
direct object Definition = mother Derivatives = maternal, maternity, material, matter, matrix, matriarch, matron, alma mater
pater (L) Definition = father Derivatives = paternal, paternal, patriot, expatriate, repatriate, pattern, compatriot
e/ex (prefix) Definition = out of, away from Examples = exhale, eject, exit, excursion, emigrate, expedite, elude, excise, extra, exclaim
-ist (suffix) Definition = person specializing in Examples = linguist, scientist, artist, chemist, dentist, cellist, pianist, biologist, tourist
verbatim (L) Translation = word for word
modus operandi (L) Translation = way of doing things; way of operating
visualization (learning metaphor) work on seeing a word list, a definition, a map, etc. in your mind as a way of strengthening your command of the material
look around the corner (learning metaphor) plan ahead; look at what's coming up next class, next week, etc.
