context background information that helps clarify the meaning of an even
etymology history of a word or phrase
derivative [in FOWL class] an English word with a Latin or Greek root
simple subject key word that tells whom/what the sentence is about
complete subject all the words that tell whom/what the sentence is about
compound subject two or more subjects in a sentence
simple predicate key word that tells what the subject is, has, does, or feels
complete predicate all the words that tell what the subject is, has, does, or feels
compound predicate two or more verbs in a sentence
geo (Gk) Definition = earth Derivatives = geography, geology, geopolitics, geometry, geothermal, geologist
terra (L) Definition = earth Derivatives = territory, terrain, subterranean, Mediterranean, terrarium, extraterrestrial
medi- (prefix) Definition = middle Examples = Mediterranean, media, medieval, mediocre, medium, mediator, intermediate
-ish (suffix) Definition = belonging to, in the manner of Examples = Irish, Danish, Spanish, feverish, nightmarish, greenish, bookish, childish
non sequitur (L) Translation = an unrelated comment; does not follow
terra incognita (L) Translation = unknown land; unfamiliar ground
ownership through repetition (learning metaphor) consistent practice leads to deeper understanding and sense of ownership
