Chemical change/ Chemical reaction A change that results in the formation of new substances.

Catalyst A substance that increases the rate of a chemical reaction without being permanently altered by the reaction.

Subscript A number representing the number of atoms in an element in one molecule. For example, the subscript “2” in H₂0 - indicates there are 2 hydrogen atoms in a water molecule.
Coefficient A number that multiplies a term in an equation For example, 6H₂0 means that there are 6 water molecules.

Conservation of Matter Matter cannot be created or destroyed
Reactants Substances you start with in a reaction
Products Substances you end with in a reaction
Decomposition Substances broken down into two or more products, + sign on the right
Synthesis Substance combine, there is a + on the left

Endothermic A process that absorbs heat energy it gets colder around it Endo = Enter → heat enters (goes in)
Exothermic A process that releases heat energy It gets warmer around it Exo = Exit → heat exits (leaves)
