TermDefinition
What are the inner planets? Planets that are before the asteroid belt, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars
What are the outer planets? Planets that are after the asteroid belt. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
What are characteristics of inner planets? Smaller, spaced closer together, made of rock
What are the characteristics of outer planets? Larger, more spread out, made up of gas
What is the name of our solar system's star? The Sun
What does the Sun provide to the Earth? Light, heat, energy
What is gravity? A force of attraction between 2 objects with mass.
What does gravity depend on? Mass and distance
Why does the moon appear lit up? It reflects light from the Sun
Solar Eclipse When the moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun. It is a new moon phase.
Lunar Eclipse When the Earth is positioned between the Sun and the Moon. It is a full moon phase.
Planet A large body in space that orbits/revolves around a star.
Moon An object in space that orbits/revolves around a planet.
Revolve When one object goes around another object.
Rotate When an object spins on its axis.
Solar System A collection of all of the objects that revolve around a star. (planets, moons, asteroids, comets, etc.)
What is a star? A massive ball of gas that provides heat, light, and energy.
