| idiom | group of words whose meaning is different from the literal meanings of the words themselves, e.g. hit the hay, like the cookie crumbles, break a leg |
| synonym | word or phrase that has the same or similar meaning to another word |
| antonym | a word that means the opposite of another word |
| homonym | words with identical pronunciation but different meanings (and spelling), e.g. there - their - they're |
| acronym | a word formed from the first letter of other words in a phrase or name, e.g. CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), MENA (Middle East North Africa) |
| conjunction | word used to join words or groups of words, e.g. and, but, for, either, or, neither, nor |
| interjection | word used to show emotion in sentence, e.g. Ouch! No! Yes! Stop! |
| article | word used to define noun as specific—the—(definite article) or non-specific—a, an—(indefinite article) N.B.: You may hear articles referred to as both determiners and adjectives. |
