TermDefinition
idiom group of words whose meaning is different from the literal meanings of the words themselves, e.g. hit the hay, like the cookie crumbles, break a leg
synonym word or phrase that has the same or similar meaning to another word
antonym a word that means the opposite of another word
homonym words with identical pronunciation but different meanings (and spelling), e.g. there - their - they're
acronym a word formed from the first letter of other words in a phrase or name, e.g. CIA (Central Intelligence Agency), MENA (Middle East North Africa)
conjunction word used to join words or groups of words, e.g. and, but, for, either, or, neither, nor
interjection word used to show emotion in sentence, e.g. Ouch! No! Yes! Stop!
article word used to define noun as specific—the—(definite article) or non-specific—a, an—(indefinite article) N.B.: You may hear articles referred to as both determiners and adjectives.
scope (Gk) see DERIVATIVES: telescope, periscope, orthoscopic, microscope, stethoscope, kaleidoscope, horoscope
vid/s (L) see DERIVATIVES: vision, revise, evident, provide, video, provident, visible, supervise, envision, provision
post- (prefix) after EXAMPLES: postgame, postwar, posterity, postgraduate, postscript, postpone, postmodern, postmortem
-ness (suffix) state, quality, condition EXAMPLES: happiness, wilderness, goodness, cloudiness, bumpiness, pettiness, wistfulness, iciness
de facto (Latin) the way things really are (in contrast to de jure)
sub rosa (Latin) happening or done in secret
interval training alternating combination of short bursts of intense work/exercise followed by short rests; repeat
