| irony | outcome of events that's opposite to what was expected |
| tone | refers to the attitude of the author, as the reader infers it |
| infer | to make an educated guess based on surrounding evidence, not explicit statements |
| alliteration | repetition of consonant sounds within words, e.g. Hurt / is a hollow, hazy, / mauve and mildew feeling |
| atmosphere | refers to the air breathed by the reader as she enters the world of fiction, e.g. calm, sinister, spooky |
| pronoun | word used to take the place of a noun, e.g. he, she, it, they |
| antecedent | noun that's being replaced by the pronoun |
| personal pronoun | pronoun that can behave like a subject (e.g. She laughs.) or direct object (The chef praised her.) |
| possessive pronoun | pronoun used to show possession, what belongs to whom, also known as adjectival pronouns, e.g. my dog, your book, her sister, their dinner, our team, his job, its wheel |
| indefinite pronoun | pronoun that refers to no one in particular, e.g. everybody, something, nobody, many, anything, several, nothing, no one, everything, somewhere, nowhere, everywhere, any, few, anyone |
| bio (Gk) | life DERIVATIVES: biology, biologist, microbiology, biography, biochemistry, biopsy, biomedical, biometric |
| vivo (L) | to live DERIVATIVES: convivial, revive, vivid, survivor, vivisection, vivacity, vivify, revival |
