TermDefinition
poetry words chosen and arranged to inspire the imagination
literal words used exactly according to their accepted meanings
figurative opposite of literal
imagery refers to the visual content of language--a mental picture that appeals to our senses
line-break point at which the author ends one line and starts another
stanza group or sequence of lines arranged in a pattern (sometimes looks similar to a paragraph in a piece of prose writing)
simile comparison of one thing to another using like or as, e.g. Your mind is like a computer
adverb word used to describe a verb, adjective, or other adverb, e.g. run quickly, write slowly
graph (Gk) Definition: write Derivatives: autograph, seismograph, graphic, choreography, graffiti, bibliography, photograph
duct (L) Definition: lead Derivatives: educate, aqueduct, conductor, reduce, product, introduce, conducive, induction
circum- (prefix) Definition: around Examples: circle, circumnavigate, circumference, circumspect, circumlocution, circumvent
-er/or (suffix) Definition: person who does something Examples: writer, swimmer, biographer, treasurer, collector, sailor, author, traitor, doctor, donor
mea culpa (L) my fault
sine qua non (L) essential ingredient; without which nothing
changing gears changing speeds--sometimes moving quickly through the material, sometimes moving slowly
