Crude oil flash cards
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What is crude oil a mixture of? | Hydrocarbons |
| What are hydrocarbons made of? | Hydrogen and carbon atoms only |
| What is the process that separates crude oil | Fractional distillation |
| Short chain carbon atoms rise to the top or the bottom of the distillation tube? | Top |
| What are the short chain molecules used for at the top of the distillation tube? | Fuels |
| What are the properties of short chain hydrocarbons? | Low boiling point Light in colour Easy to ignite Runny |
| What are properties of long chain hydrocarbons? | High boiling point Dark in colour Hard to light Thick |
| What are the long chain hydrocarbons used for? | Ships fuel, roads and roofing |
| What’s the name of the fraction that is used for road coverings? | Bitumen |
| What are alkanes? | Saturated hydrocarbons |
| What does ‘saturated’ mean? | Single bonds only |
| What is the general formula for alkanes? | CnH2n+2 |
| What is the name of the alkane with 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 carbon atoms in their molecular formula? | 1= methane, 2= Ethane, 3= propane, 4=Butane, 5= pentane, 6= Hexane |
| What does the term unsaturated mean? | Have at least 1 carbon to carbon double bond |
| What are alkenes? | Unsaturated hydrocarbons |
| What is the name of the alkene with 1,2,3,4,5 and 6 carbon atoms in their molecular formula? | 2= Ethene, 3= propene, 4=Butene, 5= pentene, 6= Hexene |
| What are alkenes used for? | making plastics |
| What is an isomer? | compounds with the same chemical/molecular formula but different structure (arrangement of atoms) |
| What is an addition reaction? | involve adding two atoms across the c=c bond in an unsaturated compound, forming a saturated compound |
| What can bromine water test for? | alkanes, alkenes |
| What colour does bromine water go in alkane and alkene solutions? | alkene= colourless alkane= brown/orange |
| What are polymers? | large molecules formed by the combination of many smaller molecules called monomers |
| What happens during an addition polymerisation reaction? | The double bonds in the alkenes break to leave single bonds, the monomers then join together to form a very long chain called a polymer |
| What is cracking? | A process that involves heating the hydrocarbons in a long chain alkane to break them into smaller chain molecules |
| why are smaller chain alkanes more useful? | They are used as fuels that burn easier |
| What does the term non-renewable mean? | A source of energy that cannot be recycled/grown, once used it it cannot be used again |
| What are the 3 main components of the fire traingle? | oxygen, fuel and heat |
