Behavior Therapy
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| What are the major characteristics of behavior therapy? | - Directive, structured, active - Suited for clear behavioral goals-- reduction from alcohol, drugs, undesirable habits, fears - Includes classical and operant conditioning |
| What is classical conditioning? | Involves repeated presentation of a stimulus that, over time, causes a given response when paired with something else. |
| What is extinction? | Involves the conditioned response decreasing over time after the presentation of the conditioned stimulus is removed. Doesn't completely remove classical conditioning but allows for new learning. |
| What is exposure therapy? | Involves repeated and thorough exposure to a feared stimulus, effective for treating phobias. |
| What is operant conditioning? | A type of learning based on consequences, in which behavior is influenced by the positive or negative association of the consequence that follows a behavior. |
| Positive Reinforcement | something pleasant is added or experienced after a behavior-- the behavior increases |
| Negative Reinforcement | something unpleasant is removed or goes away after a behavior-- the behavior increases |
| Positive Punishment | something unpleasant is added or experienced after a behavior-- the behavior decreases |
| Negative Punishment | something pleasant is removed or goes away after a behavior-- the behavior decreases |
| How can operant conditioning be used in therapy/counseling? | It can be used to increase client's positive behavior and decrease/eliminate client's undesirable behavior |
| Behavior Modification | application of operant conditioning to alter behavior |
| Shaping | The process of gradually reinforcing particular target behaviors to approximate the desired behavior (i.e., a gradual change in behaviors) |
| Token Economy | Providing a token to a person each time each time the target behavior occurs, the tokens are then traded in for a reward |
| Contingency Management | Systematic delivery of reinforcing or punishing consequences to alter behavior |
| Functional Behavior Assessment | Used to identify the reasons for certain behaviors by identifying the relationships between the stimuli and the responses. |
