Nucleus The "control center" of the cell that contains genetic material (DNA
Cytoplasm The jelly-like substance inside the cell where cellular activities occur
Cell Membrane The outer layer that protects the cell and controls the movement of substances in and out
Mitochondria Known as the "powerhouse" of the cell; they generate energy for the cell
Ribosomes Responsible for protein synthesis, critical for cell function
Red Blood Cells Carry oxygen from the lungs to tissues and remove carbon dioxid
White Blood Cells Defend the body against infection and disease
Muscle Cells Contract to produce movement (skeletal, cardiac, and smooth muscle
Nerve Cells (Neurons) Transmit electrical signals to communicate between the brain and other body parts
Epithelial Cells Form protective barriers and are involved in absorption and secretion (e.g., skin cells, cells lining the digestive tract
