| producer | organisms that produce their own food using sunlight or chemical reactions (chemosynthesis ) |
| consumer | organisms that depend on other organisms for food |
| primary consumer | herbivores that feed directly on producers |
| secondary consumer | carnivores or omnivores that feed on primary consumers |
| tertiary consumer | apex predators that feed on secondary consumers they are usually at the top of the food chain |
| decomposer | organisms that break down dead or decaying organisms ,recycling nutrients back into the ecosystem |
| scavenger | animals that feed on dead organisms they did not kill |
| omnivore | organisms that eat both plants and animals |
| carnivore | organisms that primarily eat other animals |
| herbivore | organisms that eat only plants |
| food web | a complex network of interconnected food chains within an ecosystem |
| energy pyramid | a graphical representation of the flow through an ecosystem with producers at the bottom and apex predators at the top |
| trophic level | the position an organisms accupies in a food chain or web (e.g producer, primary, consumer ,secondary consumer etc) |
| food chain | a linear sequence of organisms where each organism serves as food for the next in the chain |
| photosynthesis | the process by which plants and other producers use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water |
| predator | an animal that hunts and kills other animals for food |
| prey | an animal that is hunted and eaten by a predator |
