TermDefinition
Body planes imaginary line through the body at various parts to separate the body into sections
Bilateral Both sides of the body
Unilateral one side of the body
Transverse plane Horizontal plane that divides the body into a top half and a bottom half
Superior Body parts above other parts
Inferior Body parts below other parts
Cranial Body parts located near the head
Caudal Body parts located near the sacral region of the spinal column also known as the tail
Sagittal plane Divides the body into left and right sections
Midsagittal or median plane Sagittal plane that runs down the midline of the body and divides the body into equal halves
Medial Body parts close to the midline
Lateral Body parts away from the midline
Frontal or coronal plane Divides the body into a front section and a back section
Ventral or anterior The front of the body
Dorsal or posterior Body parts on the back of the body
Proximal and distal are terms used to describe the location of the extremities( arms and legs) in relation to the main trunk of the body
Superficial Terms relate to structures within the body
Deep structures that are located away from the body surface
Body cavities spaces within the body that contain vital organs
Dorsal cavity Long continuous cavity located on the back of the body
Cranial cavity Contains the brain
Spinal cavity contains the spinal cord
Ventral cavities separated into two distinct cavities by the dome shaped muscle called the diaphragm
Thoracic cavity located in the chest and contains the esophagus trachea bronchi lungs heart and large blood vessels
Abdominal cavity contains the stomach small intestine most of the large intestine appendix liver gallbladder pancreas and spleen
Pelvic cavity the lower abdominal cavity
Orbital cavity the eyes
Nasal cavity the nose structures
Buccal cavity mouth for the teeth and tongue
Abdominal region refers to the part of the body located between the chest (thorax) and the pelvis
