| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Adaptation | a change that results in an organism being better suited to its environment. |
| Adaptive Radiation | rapid increase in number of species with a common ancestor |
| Allele | one of two or more forms that a gene could take. |
| Beak Depth | the distance from the top to the bottom of a beak, as shown at right. |
| Evolution | change in the inherited traits of a population of organisms that occurs over many generations. |
| Extinction | No remaining population of a species; Rates can be rapid during times of ecological stress; Often caused by human activity |
| Fitness | a measure of how well an organism can survive and reproduce in a given environment. |
| Gene | a segment of DNA that determines or helps to determine a trait; Genes are located on chromosomes. |
| Gene Flow | movement of genes into/out of a population May have new alleles or existing alleles in different proportions |
| Gene Pool | the total collection of all the different genes, along with their various forms (alleles), present in an interbreeding population of a specific species at any given time |
| Genetic Drift | a mechanism of evolution characterized by random, chance-based fluctuations in allele frequencies within a population over generations |
| Gradualism | slow and steady evolution over a long period of time |
| Hardy-Weinberg Equation | equation that describes the relative frequency of genotypes in a stable population given the proportions of alleles. |
| Hardy-Weinberg Principle | principle stating that the proportions of different alleles and genotypes in a population will remain stable as long as certain conditions are met |
| Living Diversity | the immense variety of life on Earth, encompassing the total variability among living organisms from all sources. |
| Mutation | a change in a gene. |
| Niche | the functional role, position, and space a species occupies within an ecosystem, encompassing all its interactions with biotic and abiotic factors. |
| Non-random Mating | a biological phenomenon where individuals choose mates based on specific phenotypes or genotypes, or mate with close relatives, rather than pairing randomly |
