Science Force

Physical Science Force Vocab

QuestionAnswer
What are simple machines? Simple machines make work easier.
What is mass? Mass is the amount of matter that that makes up an object.
What is force? Force is a push or a pull.
What is Friction? Friction is a force that causes objects in motion to speed up or slow down when two surfaces rub together.
What is speed? Speed is a measure of how far an object moves in a certain amount of time.
What is motion? Motion is movement, or a change in an object's position.
What happens when more friction is present? The more friction present, the more an object in motion slows down.
What is position? Position is the place where an object is located.
What happens when an object is light? The lighter an object the less force you must apply to get it in motion.
What is gravity? Gravity is a force that pulls things toward Earth.
What happens when more force is applied? The more force applied, the more energy is released.
What do forces do? Forces make things speed up, or slow down or change direction. Without a force a still object remains still and a moving object would keep moving.
What are the types of forces? Magnetic force, pushes and pulls, gravity, air resistance and friction.
What are unbalanced forces? Unbalanced forces happen when one side has greater force in one direction. This will cause the object to move in the direction the greater force is going.
What are balanced forces? Balance forces are two equal forces acting in opposite direction. Because it is balanced, the object does not move.
What happens when something has mass? The more mass something has, the more force required to move it.
What happens when mass in objects acts with gravity. Gravity pulls everything toward Earth. The more mass something has the more gravity acts on it. If you drop a bowling ball and a beach ball off a building, the bowling ball would hit the ground first because it has more mass.
What is friction? Opposes motion between two touching objects. It slows things down
How can an object go farther? Applying more force
What do forces do? Make things speed up, slow down or change direction. Without force a still object remains still and a moving object would keep movin
What are some examples of unbalanced forces? gravity vs. air resistance. A push vs friction and gravity. A pull vs friction. A push vs. push

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
