caste a class, or group, in Hindu society
dharma belief that a person has a duty to line honorably
jatis a social group that does a particular job and that a person is born into
karma how the good and evil done in a past life determines what happens to one’s soul in the next life
monism the idea that all existing things in reality come from one original source
reincarnation the belief that a person’s soul is reborn into a new body after death
Sanskrit an ancient Indian language
varnas concept that people are born with a set of skills that help them serve one of the four general needs of a functioning society
Vedas a collection of ancient writings viewed as sacred by many Hindus
Brahma This deity is responsible for creating the universe
Vishnu This deity preserves the universe
Shiva This deity is responsible for transforming (destroying and recreating) the universe
Saraswati This deity is the goddess of Knowledge and creativity
Lakshmi This deity is the goddess of Health and prosperity
Brahman the supreme, all-powerful spiritual force in Hinduism that exists everywhere and in everything
Brahmins varna that includes priests and scholars
Kshatriyas varna that includes rulers and warriors
Vaishyas varna that includes merchants, artisans, and farmers
Shudras varna that includes servants and laborers
Varna Dharma belief that people should follow the duties of their varna to help keep society balanced
