| Term | Definition |

| season | the changes that occur due to the tilt of Earth’s axis and cause the equator to receive direct sunlight and the poles to have more indirect light |
| equinox | two days a year where all locations on earth receive 12 hours of dark and 12 hours of light, occurs in March and September |
| solstice | a day when the Earth’s poles are the most tilted toward or away from the Sun creating the most OR least amount of light received, occurs in June and September |
| moon phase | the Sun shining on the moon and the moon reflecting that light back to Earth |
| waxing | more of the Moon’s right side is lit each night leading to a full moon |
| waning | when more of the Moon’s left side is lit at night |
| crescent | when the side of the moon we can see is less than halfway lit |
| gibbous | when the side of the moon we can see is more than halfway lit but less than fully lit |
| solar eclipse | when the Moon, Earth, and Sun align during a new moon in a way that the Moon’s shadow appears on Earth |
| lunar eclipse | when the Earth’s shadow is cast over the Moon during a full moon |
| penumbra | the lighter part of an eclipse shadow resulting in a partial eclipse |
| umbra | the darker part of an eclipse shadow resulting in a total eclipse |
| tide | the daily rise and fall of the sea level due to the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun |
| spring tide | occurs during a full or new moon and results in the highest high tides and lowest low tides |
| neap tide | occurs during first quarter and third quarter moons when the Sun, Earth, and Moon form a right angle resulting in lower high tides and higher low tides |
