EARTH SCIENCE REGENT

review for earth space sciences regents

TermDefinition
kelvin [definition] the scientific unit used for measuring temperature
kelvin [how can it be used] kelvin is used to measure temperature, you canNOT god below 0 kelvin negative Kelvin does not exist, the lowest aka colder point of Kelvin is 0 or in Fahrenheit it’s -459.67 or In Celsius it’s -273.15
meniscus [definition] the curved surface of a liquid inside a container. For example a beaker.
what is water displacement? water displacement is used to find the mass of irregularly shaped objects like rocks,
how do you calculate water displacement? you can calculate it by 1. Setting a bottle with 100 ml of liquid (or however much you want) 2. Drop the object in (then record the data) 3. Subtract 100 ml ( or amount of liquid you used ) from the recorded 4. The rest remaining is the mass.
Density [definition] An objects mass per unit volume
Density [formula] m D = — v
density [formula] (breakdown] M = mass V = volume D = density
Temperature [definition] The measure of the average kinetic energy of molecules and atoms in a material.
3 types of temperature [measurements] Fahrenheit, Celsius, and Kelvin
Freezing point in Fahrenheit and Celsius F = 32 C = 0
Freezing point [kelvin] K = 273.15
Boiling point, [ Fahrenheit and Celsius F = 212 C = 100
Atomic mass [formula] AM = protons + neutrons
Amplitude [definition] Amplitude is the distance form the top line to the bottom line [think of it as the height of the wave]
Long wave length = Low frequency
short wave length = High frequency
Frequency [ definition ] How many wave fronts pass a specific point per given amount of time
What electromagnetic wave on the light spectrum has the lowest frequency Microwaves
What electromagnetic wave has the highest frequency in the light spectrum ultraviolet
nm [measurement] Nanometer
hz [measurement] hertz = frequency
Name the 4 terrestrial planets Earth, mars, Venus, mercury
name the 4 Jovian planet + exo planet saturn, Neptune, uranus, Jupiter, PLUTO
Name properties of physical weathering Frost action, abrasion, root wedging
Name the properties of chemical weathering Dissolving “acid” , oxidation
Half life (definition) Amount of time it takes for half of the original amount of radioactive isotope to decay.
what is radio metric dating? The method used for getting the exact age for a material using the amounts of radioactive isotopes in it.
How do caves form Ground water from limestone or other impermeable spaces dissolve the limestone over time causing breakage
permeable (definition) allows water to pass through
Impermeable (definition) does NOT allow water to pass through
How do large crystals develop From slow cooling of Milton magma
What are the 3 rock types igneous, sedimentary, metamorphic.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
