Circadian Rhythm A periodic variation in behavioral activity that repeats every 24 hours
REM Sleep Rapid eye movement sleep, where most dreaming occurs (~⅕ total sleep)
Alpha Waves this is an example of a low-amplitude brain wave, it happens when no deliberate mental tasks are taking place
Delta Waves The lowest brain frequency that can be recorded, associated with deep sleep
NREM Sleep non-rapid eye movement sleep, delta waves appear as sleep progresses
Insomnia Difficulty maintaining or initiating restorative sleep
Narcolepsy Having excessive daytime sleepiness
Manifest Content This is what literally happens in the content of a dream
Latent Content The hidden meaning of a dream
REM Rebound This is the increased occurrence of REM sleep after REM sleep doesn’t happen for a while
Tolerance when persistently using a drug, its effects become lessened with persistent use as your body adjusts to the drug
Withdrawal adjusting after heavy drug use, negative psychological and physical effects occur
Physical Dependence This is having a negative physical reaction when not taking drugs
Orexin Any group of proteins that triggers feeding
Psychological Dependence Having a negative psychological reaction when not taking drugs
Depressant diminishing or stopping a function/activity of a body system
Stimulant any agent that excites functional activity in an organism or part of an organism
Opiate any compound that is derived from opium, clinically used as pain relievers
Hallucinogen A substance that is able to produce a sensory effect (visual, audio, etc)
Post Hypnotic Suggestion something told to a person in a hypnosis that they carry out after hypnosis
Suprachiasmatic Nucleus region of the hypothalamus that controls circadian rhythm
