| Term | Definition |

| Interlude | A linking section that comes between two parts of a song |
| Bridge | A contrasting section between verses and choruses |
| Power chord | A chord where the root is doubled and the fifth is played |
| Pizzicato | Plucking the strings on string instruments instead of using a bow |
| Tremolo | Moving the bow very quickly back and forth over the string creates a trembling effect |
| Vamping | Repeating the same chord or simple chord progressions over and over |
| Glissando | A glide between two different pitches |
| Staccato | Playing notes short and detached |
| Antiphony | Involves dialogue or conversation between vocal parts |
| Counterpoint | Two or more intertwining melodies (polyphonic) |
| Falsetto | Is the vocal technique that allows male singers to sing outside of their natural vocal range |
| Speed | Altering the speed at which a tape is played to change the pitch |
| Sampling | A sampler is a piece of equipment that can record, process and play back sound recordings |
| Panning | Moving the audio from one speaker to another on the recording |
| Distortion | Overloading the speaker to create a harsh, fuzzy sound |
| Compression | Allows producers to alter the dynamic range of a track so that it fits better into the musical mix |
| Reverberation/echo | Occurs naturally in large, enclosed spaces. It creates an echo that slowly fades |
| Overdubbing | Adding previously recorded material to the track |
| Tape splicing | Tape recording of tuning sounds and audience noise were cut up and stuck back together in a random sequence |
