| Ecosystem | A community interacting with the nonliving parts of its enviornment |
| Community | All the populations of different species that live in the same place at the same time and interact with others |
| Population | Organsims of one species that live in the same pleace at the same time and can reproduce |
| Biosphere | All parts of earth were life exists, including air, land and water |
| Abiotic factor | Nonliving physical features of the enviornment, including soil, water, temperature, air, light, wind, and minerals |
| Biotic factor | Living organisms in the environment, such as plants and animals |
| Food chain | A model used to show how energy from food passes from one organism to another |
| Food web | A model used to describe a series of overlapping food chains |
| Ecological pyramid | a model used to describe the transfer of energy through a community |
| Niche | The role of an organism in an ecosystem |
| Limiting factor | Any biotic or abiotic factor that restricts the numberof individuals in a population |
| Carrying capacity | The largest number of individuals that an enviornment can support and maintain over time |
| Predator | The animal that catches and eats other animals |
| Prey | The animal being eaten by the predator |
| Symbiosis | A close relationship between two organims that live together |
| Mutualism | A symbiotic relationship that benefits both partners |
| Commensalism | A symbiotic relationship that benefits one partner but not the other, no harm |
| Parasitism | A symbiotic relationship that benefits the parasite but harms the parasite's partner |
| Producer (authotroph) | Organisms that make their own food |
| Consumer (heterotroph) | Organisms that must acquire their food |
| Herbivore | Organisms that only eat plants |
| Carnivore | Organisms that only eat meats |
| Scavenger | Organisms that eat animals killed by other animals |
| Decomposer | Organisms that break down dead plant and animal material and return it to teh soil |
| Water cycle | The continous movement of water in the biosphere through evaportaion, condensation, precipation. |
| Omnivore | Organisms that eat plants and meats |
