| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Biomass Energy | Energy made up of biomass |
| Biofuel | Liquid fuels from biomass sources |
| Biopower | Electricity generated by the combustion of biomass |
| Geothermal Energy | The heat of radioactive breakdown |
| Ground Source Heat Pump | A renewable heating system that extracts low-temperature solar energy stored in the ground or water |
| Hydropower | The use of kinetic energy moving water to turn Turbines and generate electricity |
| Tidal Energy | Refers to using the movement of tidal water to generate electricity |
| Ocean Thermal Energy Conservation | Use a temperature difference (of at least 20° Celsius or 36° Fahrenheit) to power a turbine to produce electricity |
| Passive Solar Heating | Sunlight is absorbed into the wall and it heats up slowly during the day. |
| Active Solar Heating | Heat from the sun is collected, stored and used primarily for domestic hot water heating but also can be used for space heating |
| Flat-Plate Solar Collector | A flat metal plate that collects and absorbs solar energy |
| Photovoltaic Cell | When solar energy is converted directly into electricity |
| Concentrating Solar power | A technology that uses mirrors to focus sunlight in order to generate electricity |
| Wind Turbine | A device that converts winds kinetic energy to energy of motion into electrical energy |
| Wind Farm | Wind Turbines built in groups |
| Electrolysis | A process that releases hydrogen |
| Fuel Cells | A device made from air and fuel |
