Chapter 18
RENEWABLE ENERGY ALTERNATIVES
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Biomass energy | Is energy that is produced from this material |
| Biopower | Electricity that is generated by the combustion of biomass |
| Biofuels | Are helping to power millions of vehicles on today's roads's. |
| Geothermal energy | Which heats rocks below earth's surface |
| Ground source heat pump | takes advantage of the fact that the temperature of soil a few feet under-ground stays about the same all year, even thought the air temperature changes with the seasons |
| Hydrpower | we use the kinetic energy of moving water to turn turbines and generate electricity |
| Tidal energy | refers to using the movement of tidal water to generate electricity. |
| Passive solar heating | involves designing a building to collect, store, and distribute the sun's energy naturally. |
| active solar heating | system uses technology to collect, move, and store heat derived from the sun. |
| Flate-plate solar collector | generally consists of a black, heat-absorbing metal plate in a flat box with a glass cover |
| (PV) cell | solar energy in convertade directly into electricity |
| Concentrating solar power (CSP) | is a technology that uses mirrors to focus sunlight in order to generate electricity. |
| Wind turbine | is a device that converts the wind's kinetic energy, or energy of motion, into electricale energy. |
| Wind farms. | The world's largest wind farms contain hundreds of turbines |
| Electrolights | water molecules are broken down into oxygen gas |
| Fuel cell's | the chemical reaction that takes place in a feul cell is the reverse of the reaction for electrolytes. |
