TermDefinition
Biomass Energy Energy that is produced from a certain material.
Biofuels Liquid fuels from biomass sources.
Geothermal energy High pressure combined with the breakdown of radioactive elements.
Ground source heat pump A device used to pump hot water into buildings.
Hydropower Renewable energy from the motion if water than from any other source.
Tidal energy The movement of tidal water to generate electricity.
Ocean thermal energy (OTEC) The process that converts the thermal energy in ocean water to electrical energy all people can use.
Passive solar heating Designing a building to collect, store, and distribute the suns energy naturally,
Active solar heating A system using technology to collect, store, and heat derived from the sun.
Flat plate solar collector A black heat-absorbing metal plate in a flat box with a glass cover.
Photovoltaic (PV) cell Solar energy converted directly into electricity
Concentrating solar power (CSP) A technology that uses mirrors to focus sunlight in order to generate electricity.
Wind turbine A device that converts the winds kinetic energy or, energy of motion, into electrical energy.
Wind farms Large farms that contain hundreds of wind turbines.
Electrolysis Water molecules that are broken down into oxygen gas and hydrogen gas.
Fuel cells An electric current flowing through a wire from one terminal to another.
