Reading - 1st and 2nd quarter terms
| terms | deffintion |

| biography | this is a story of a persons life that is written by another person. |
| character | this is an imaginary person, animal, or creature that is created by the author. |
| character trait | this is a quality or feature of a character's personality; what a character is like. A character trait can be negative or positive. Examples include trustworthy, reliable, adventurous, courageous, dishonest, bossy, demanding and selfish. |
| conflict | this is a problem or struggle between opposite forces in literature. Character vs. character or character vs. nature are external conflicts. character vs. self is an internal conflict. |
| compare | this shows similarities between two things or ideas. |
| connections | this occurs when the reader can connect or relate what he has read to something else. (Text to Text, Text to Self, or Text to World.) |
| contrast | this shows differences between two things or ideas. |
| excerpt | this is a selected passage, or a portion of text from a work of fiction or nonfiction . |
| figurative language | this is a tool that an author uses to help the reader visualize what is happening in a story or poem. |
| flashback | This is a technique in which the author interrupts the plot of the story to recreate an incident of an earlier time; flashback is often used to provide additional information to the reader |
| foreshadowing | This technigique hints, indeicates, or shows what will occur later in a narrative. |
| genre | This refers to categories of literature. 2 main genres are fiction and nonfiction. fiction writing is the product of imagination rather than fact, and the primary purpose is to entertain. nonfiction writing is true and the prupose is to inform. |
| graphic organizer | readers and writers use graphic organizers to visually organize thoughts before starting to write. Examples include charts, diagrams, and timelines. |
| inference | the reader takes what the author wrote, adds what the reader knows about the topic and makes an assumption. Most authors provide hints and clues about the story that let the reader "read between the lines." |
| irony | This is a difference between what is expected and what actually happens. There are 3 types of irony. Verbal irony, dramatic irony and situational irony. |
| mood | This is the overall feeling created by a piece of writing. Mood can oftern be described in a few words, such as scary, linely, empty etc, but you must be able to refer to specific details in the text to defend your thinking. |
| point of view | This is perspcective from which a story is told. 1st person point of view: The narrator is one of the characters in the story. 3rd person telling the story is an outsider looking at the action of the story. |
| prediction | This is process of gathering informaiton and combing it with the reader's own knowledge to guess what might occur next in the story. |
| setting | This is the time and place where the action of a story occurs. |
| summary | This is a concise(short yet detailed) explanation of a reading selection in the words of the reader. A summary contains only the main ideas and does not include the reader's interpretation or opinion of the text. Think facts only! |
| Text Structure | This is the organizational pattern of the text. Cause/Effect: 2 events are related, the 1st is the cause and the 1 that follows is the effect. Sequence of Events: the order in which the events in the story are presented to the reader. |
| Theme | This is the underlying or fundamental message of the story that the author is trying to communicate to the reader. Them may be thought of as the lesson or moral of the story. |
| visualize | This is a strategy where the reader can picture in his/her mind what is happening in the text. |
| Authors purpose | this is the authors reason or intention for writing the selection |
| context clues | these are words and phrases in a sentence which help you reason out the meaning of an unfamiliar word. |
| simile | a comparison between two unlike things using the words like or as. |
| metaphor | a comparison between 2 things without using the word like or as |
| hyperbole | an exaggerated statment used to make a strong effect |
| personification | giving lifelike characteristics to inanimate objects |
| found poem | a found poem is one in which words and phrases are taken from the text |
| adjective | these words describe nouns such as excited,frightened,sad,joyful and obnoxious. |
| autobiography | this is a story that someone writes about his or her life. |
