element Is a pure substance made of only one type of atom
element Cannot be broken down
element Found on the periodic table
element Examples: oxygen (O), gold (Au), carbon (C), iron (Fe)
compound Is made of two or more different elements chemically bonded
compound Can only be separated by chemical reactions; this is hard to do
compound Examples: water (H₂O), carbon dioxide (CO₂), salt (NaCl)
mixture Is a combination of substances not chemically bonded
mixture Can be separated by physical methods (like filtering, sorting)
mixture Examples: air, salt + water, salad
