med term

somatic diseases and conditions

TermDefinition
alzheimer's disease (AD) idiopathic atrophy of neurons in brain (nerves in brain are shrinking/disintegrating), typically frontal lobe (personality, relationships) BUT long term memory is okay, angry outbursts, forgetfulness of daily things causes complications
amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) (Lou gherig's disease) degeneration of skeletal motor neurons (stephen hawking), idiopathic, you're aware you can't move your body, brain = bueno, body = no bueno, no treatment
bells palsy hemiplegia of face (can't move half of your face), cranial nerve 7 (peripheral - supplies face), could be from a virus/infection
cerebral aneurysm localized ballooning of vessel in the brain
cerebral contusion brain bruise, bump on the head (concussion) but brain bonks into skull
cerebral palsy (CP) usually due to birth trauma, brain goes without oxygen too long and causes it not to develop normally (cord around neck)
cerebrovascular accident (CVA) loss of blood supply in brain (stroke)
hemorrhagic stroke ruptured system
ischemic stroke artery blocked
coma brain turns off everything except vita body functions, way to heal/repair
concussion bruising/injury to brain from sports/trauma, (a contusion could occur), affects sight (also called TBI - any type of traumatic brain injury)
dementia precursor to AD or may not progress at all (bit of forgetfulness of daily tasks like PARKING)
epidural hematoma (EDH) bleeding from trauma in between the dura mater and skull, can cause intracranial pressure to increase from brain moving out of the way, to relieve pressure, HOLES and taking part of the skull out to drain
epilepsy disease that causes seizures, arrhythmia of brain (misfire of neurons) (seizures are to correct itself like an AED for heart)
gullian-barre syndrome (GB syndrome) inflammation of peripheral nervous system (post infection), progressive muscle weakness, that may lead to paralysis, (no treatment, brain must fix itself) (travis fredrick)
headache/migrane NOT BRAIN (meninges, cranium, muscles of scalp, skin, blood vessels)
multiple sclerosis (MS) autoimmune (anywhere, any way, any time, varies w/ patient), causes degeneration of myelin (makes sure messages get sent w/ out escaping) on neuron, results in paralysis a lot bc messages can't be sent properly, a lot of pain, weakness
parkinson's disease (PD) idiopathic disease that causes tremors (dopamine tells muscle to keep contracting), not many treatments (michael j fox)
poliomyelitis (polio) viral infection of nervous system that causes paralysis (there's a vaccine), post-polio syndrome -> developing symptoms of polio (not severe) after vaccine later in life
seizure high fever, brain trauma, toxic environment to brain (medication, drugs, alcohol), infections (meningitis, sepsis)
shingles herpes (chicken pox), viral infection that causes breakout (NASTY) along ribs (instead of all over), a "reawakening" of chicken pox (less harsh), treated with antivirals
subdural hematoma (SDH) like EDH, except under the dura mater
transient ischemic attack (TIA) line angina is to an MI (myocardial infection) , as TIA Is to CVA (warning sign of a stroke)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
