| New Deal | the program of President Franklin D. Roosevelt meant to promote economic recovery and social reform and to end the Great Depression |
| Alphabet Agencies | government agencies formed during the New Deal that was known by the first initials of its name |
| Appeasement | Policy adopted by Britain and France involving making concessions to Germany’s aggression in order to prevent another major war |
| Atomic weapons | New powerful bombs using a nuclear reaction; |
| Blitzkrieg | German term for the “lightning fast” offensive attack from the land and air |
| Communism | Economic and political belief that ideally all property is publicly owned, and all people are paid according to their needs and abilities. |
| Fascism | Authoritarian and nationalistic form of government that often included a belief in the supremacy of one national or ethnic group |
| GI Bill | Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944 that aided US military veterans returning from the war |
| Internment | Term for the detention of Germans, Italians, and especially the Japanese in camps throughout the United States during WWII |
| Isolationism | Policy of remaining neutral and apart from other countries and their political affairs |
| Lend lease policy | Policy which allowed the US to “lend” ships, military equipment, and other necessary wartime provisions to the Allies |
| Rationing | US policy to regulate the amount of goods a consumer could obtain during the war |
| Victory Gardens | “War Gardens” grown by Americans to help increase the food supply during the war |
| War Bonds | The debt securities sold by the US government to raise money and finance military operations during WWII. |
