Common Math Vocabulary

equation A mathematical sentence that has two equal sides separated by an equation
Commutative Property of Multiplication The order of numbers in a multiplication problem doesn’t change the result. Example 7+4=. 4+7=
Product The answer to a multiplication problem.
Array An arrangement consisting of equal rows and equal columns
Ratio Table A tool that can be used to solve problems involving multiplication, division, fractions, and proportions
Divide To break or split into equal parts; to determine how many times one number goes into another
Quotient The answer to a division problem
Factor A number that you can multiply by another number to get a specific product
Multiple The product of one number multiplied by another number
Composite Number A number with more than two factors (more than itself and one)
Prime Number A number with exactly two different factors- itself and one.
Area The total number of square units needed to cover a shape
Product The answer to a multiplication problem
Factor A number that you can multiply by another number to get a specific product
Rectangle A flat shape with two pairs of parallel sides and four right angles
Array An arrangement consisting of equal rows and equal columns
Estimate A close guess of the actual volume, usually based on some thought or rough calculations, to make an approximate or rough count, measurement, or calculation
Multiple The product of one number multiplied by another number
Quotient The answer to division problem
Remainder The number leftover when one whole number is divided by another whole number

Dividend The number that will be divided in a division problem
Divisor The number in a division problem that divides the dividend
Fraction A number expressed as some number if equal parts of a whole
Equivalent Fraction Two or more different fractions that represent the same quantity
Numerator The top number in a fraction, which shows how many equal parts are to be counted, also the dividend
Denominator The bottom number in a fraction, which shows into how many equal parts the whole is divided; also the divisor
Improper Fraction A fraction greater than one; a fraction in which the numerator (top) is larger than the denominator (bottom)
Mixed Numeral A number greater than one written as a whole number plus a fraction whose value is less than one
Difference The result of subtracting one number from another; the amount by which one number is greater or less than another number
Rounding Approximating a number to a specific place value based on the digit immediately to the right of that place (ex. $3.82 ≈ $4.00 or 63 ≈ 60)
Expanded Form A way to write a number that shows the place value of each digit
Word Form A way to write a number that uses the word of the number. In real life, it is used on checks
Sum/Total The result of adding two or more numbers; the answer to an addition problem
Difference The result of subtracting one number from another; the amount by which one number is greater or less than another number
Range The difference between the largest and smallest numbers in a data set
Median The middle value of an ordered set of data
Mode The number or numbers that appear most often in a set of data
