Understanding Functions
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| constant rate | a fixed quantity that stays the same regardless of changes in variables |
| function | a rule in which each input results in exactly 1 output |
| initial value | in a linear function, the value of the output when the input is 0 |
| input | independent variable of a function; the x-value |
| linear function | a function that can be expressed by a linear graph; a nonvertical straight line or a function in the slope intercept form |
| nonlinear function | a function with a graph that is not a straight line |
| output | the dependent variable of a function; the y-value |
| qualitative description | a description that focuses on the general relationship between 2 quantities |
| rate | a ratio which gives a number of units of 1 quantity for 1 unit of another quantity; often expression using the word "per" |
| rate of change | in a linear relationship between x and y, it tells how much y changes when x changes by 1; slope |
| slope-intercept form | a lienar equation in the form y=mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept |
