Lang AP Exam terms

QuestionAnswer
What is technical diction? It is specialized vocabulary and precise language used within specific fields to communicate complex ideas to an expert auidence.
What is elaborate syntax? Complex sentence structures featuring multiple clauses and varied words to add sophistication to something.
What is an analogy? Explaining something complex by comparing it to something more simple.
What are the Aristotelian appeals? Three different methods of appealing to an audience to convince them—ethos, logos, and pathos.
What is an attitude? The writer's personal views or feelings about the subject at hand.
What is connotation? The implied meaning of a word; words can broadly have positive, negative, or neutral connotations.
What is denotation? The literal, dictionary-definition meaning of a word.
What is diction? The style of language used; generally tailored to be appropriate to the audience and situation.
What is ethos? Setting up a source as credible and trustworthy.
What is figurative language? The use of language in a non-literal way.

What is juxtaposition? Placing two very different things together for effect
What is logos? Appealing to someone's sense of concrete facts and logic.
What is pathos? Involves appealing to someone's emotions.
What is repetition? Re-using a word or phrase repeatedly for effect or emphasis.
What is a rhetorical triangle? The relationship between the author, the audience, the text/message, and the context.
What is symbolism? Using a symbol to refer to an idea or concept
What is a syntax? The way sentences are grammatically constructed.
What is a synthesis? Combining sources or ideas in a coherent way in the purpose of a larger point.
What is tone? The use of stylistic devices to reveal an author's attitude toward a subject.
What is an anecdote? A short, true story.
What is an antithesis? The complete opposites.
What is an antecedent? A thing or even that existed before another.
What is an aphorism? A short, instructive saying.
What is an asyndeton? Omission of conjunctions where they would normally be used.
What is a periodic sentence? A complex sentence in which the main clause comes last and is preceded by the subordinate clause.
What is polysyndeton? Using several conjunctions in close succession, especially where some might be omitted.
What is chiasmus? When words are repeated in reverse order. (Let us never negotiate out of fear but let us never fear to negotiate.)
What is a metonymy? The substitution of a name with that of a related one.
What is a synecdoche? A part of speech that is meant to represent the whole.
