What changes were made in the Senate after the Conflict of orders? Tribune: 10 plebs attended all Senate meeting to make sure the laws being passed were fair to the plebs
What were estruscans influences? Arches symbolizes victory,cuniculus:underground tunnels that transport water,aqueducts:transported water.
Why were the Punic wars fought? Both Romans and Carpathians wanted control over the Med Sea Trade.
What happened to Rome after Julius Caesar was assassinated? Civil war broke out; Plebs were resentful because they were forced to serve in the army, pay taxes, and their jobs were given to slaves. Republic stayed strong because of Senates.
What led to the decline of Rome? -Ineffective Emperors:(ero) +No peaceful transition lef to civil wars -High taxes led to poverty and famine -Attacks from North;Germanic Tribes, East;Persians, South:African Tribes
Who viewed any expansion negatively? Why? Plebs were forced to serve in the army and fight. There were high taxes because government had to buy supplies.
What contributions did Augustus make to the Roman Empire? Improved trade by building roads, created a police force, fire department, restored temples
Who is Caligula and what did he do? Mentally unstable, declared himself a god, made his horse a member of the Senate, assassinated by his bodyguards.
Describe the Patricians: Did not pay taxes, held high military positions in army, members of Senate and Consuls.
What is an republic? A govt ruled by elected representatives: Senate/Consuls.
Who is Claudius and what did he do? Returned art stolen by Caligula to citizens, granted citizenship to people of empire, improved Roman laws.
Who is Marcus Aurelius and what did he do? lowered taxes, sold his own possessions to help ease famine, built schools and orphanages, promoted kinder treatment of slaves
What are the physical features that form the Northen boundary of the Roman Empire? -Rhine River -Danube River -Carpathian mountains
Who actually founded Rome? Rome was founded by Latins and Estruscans that lived in Latinum.
What ideas were borrowed? Aqeuducts;Estruscans Cuniculus;Estruscans Chariot races/gladiator fighting;Estruscans Columns;Greeks
Which branch of government within the Republic was most powerful? Why? Senates, they created all of the laws and acted like judges; had more responsibilities/powere than consuls.
Define the conflict of orders: Struggle between Patricians and Plebs over more rights.
What land did the Roman conquer during the 2nd expansion? Spain, Macedonia, Sicily, and Carthage.
What was the negative outcome of the 2nd expansion? Roman farms were destroyed.
What reforms did Julius Caesar make? Made 365 day calendar, built Roads, aqueducts, and public buildings; gave jobs. Gave free gladiator/chariot races.
What lands did the Romans conquer during the 3rd expansion? Gaul, Asia Minor, Syria, Northern Africa.
What lands did the Romans conquer during the 4th expansion? Egypt, Britain, Assyria
What changes did Augustus do to Rome? (3) -Built roads and libraies -Created fire department -Improved harbors
