chem 2 acid/base rev
| Characteristics of acids | sour, pH below 7, reacts with metals, turns litmus paper red, corrosive, they must be able to give up protons easily |
| Characteristics of bases | bitter taste, soap, slippery, conducts electricity in aqueous solutions, pH above 7, must be able to receive a proton easily |
| Arrhenius acids | Produce H+ or H30+ |
| Arrhenius bases | Produce OH- |
| Lewis acids | Proton donor |
| Lewis bases | Proton acceptor |
| Bronsted-Lowry acids | accepts an electron pair to form a covalent bond |
| Bronsted-Lowry bases | donates an electron pair to form a covalent bond |
| Conjugate acid | Acid that forms when a base gains a proton |
| Conjugate base | Base that forms when an acid loses a proton |
| What is the difference between strong and weak acids | Strong acids lose a proton easily, weak acids do not |
| What is the difference between strong and weak bases | Strong bases gain a proton easily, weak bases do not |
| What is the difference between electrolytes and non-electrolytes | Electrolytes conduct electricity and dissociate and nonelectrolytes do not do either |
| What is the difference between monoprotic and polyprotic acids | Monoprotic acids can only donate one proton, polyprotic can donate multiple |
| Amphoteric | A substance that can act as either a base or an acid |
| Salt | an ionic compound that forms when a metal atom of a positive radical replaces the hydrogen of an acid |
| Neutrilization | the reaction of ions that characterize acids and ions that characterize bases to form water molecules and salt |
| Oxyacid | an acid that is a compound of hydrogen, oxygen, and a third element, usually a nonmetal |
| What are the uses and functions of hydrochloric acid | stomach acid, pickling, cleaning agent, food processing, oil wells |
| What are the uses and functions of phosphoric acid | Fertilizers and animal feed, flavoring agents, cleaning agents, detergent and ceramics |
| What are the uses and functions of acetic acid | Food supplements, fungicide, synthesizing chemicals |
| What are the uses and functions of sulfuric acid | Production of metals, paper, paint, dyes, detergents, and automobile batteries |
| Which theory of acids and bases is the most general and broad? | Lewis Theory |
| Will a strong acid or a weak acids conduct electricity better? Why? | Strong acids - they produce ions that can carry electric currents better |
