Pollutants chemical or biological substance that causes harm to the environment
Pollution the introduction of a contaminant into the natural environment that has harmful or poisonous effects
Human activities humans actions and operations that may affect the environment
Air pollution the contamination of the air by particulate matter or hazardous substances (gases)
Ozone depletion the loss of stratospheric ozone via chemical interactions with chemicals (normally containing chlorine) that convert O3 into O2
Water pollution any physical or chemical change in a body of water that can result in the water being unfit for use by living organisms
Light pollution the presence of unwanted light produced by artificial outdoor lights. This can disrupt the natural patterns of wildlife and humans, and can affect astronomical observations
Noise pollution the non natural and unwanted production of outdoor noise that can detrimentally affect humans and wildlife
Eutrophication nutrient enrichment of a body of water
Radioactive waste any material that is itself radioactive or has been contaminated with radioactive material and is no longer deemed to be of any further use
Heavy metals a metal with either a high atomic number, high density, or high toxicity. Heavy metals generally include those that are not normally found in the environment in detectable or toxic levels and have been leached into the environment due to human activities
Acid rain rain or other precipitation that has elevated H+ levels or pH below about 5.2, usually produced from emissions of sulfur
Biomagnification the process by which pesticides and other substances become more concentrated in each link of the food chain
Environmental legislation the acts, decrees, laws and policies used and enforced by governments to regulate human activities in and treatment of the natural world
Sewage waste and wastewater containing high levels of organic matter, nutrients, and pollutants discharged from homes and industry
