| What is the purpose of symbols on a construction drawing? | Symbols provide standardized information regarding electrical/plumbing items, fixtures, materials, etc. This is a more simplified method in lieu of writing long notes on drawings. |
| What are the six types of construction drawings? | Civil or site plan, architectural, structural, mechanical (HVAC), electrical, and plumbing. |
| What type of drawing shows property lines, utilities, grading, and building location? | Civil drawings which are also referred as site plans. |
| Who are the main professions involved in design and planing? | Owner/client, architect/designer, engineers, contractor/GC and subcontractors, and inspectors. |
| Owner/client | This is where the construction project begins. They have an idea of what they want and will work with an architect to design their ideas. They control the budget. |
| What is the key responsibility of an architect? | Architects work with the owner throughout the entire process of the construction. They develop the building layout and the cost. |
| What the role of the engineer? | They are hired to assist if the project is complex. They help to design the structural, mechanical, electrical and other areas of the building. |
| What is the key responsibility of the contractor/GC? | GC's step in once financing is in place and construction is ready to begin. GC's hire subcontractors for all stages of the construction project. |
| Why is it critical to have inspectors during the entire construction project? | Inspectors not only review the architect's plans before construction begins and inspects to ensure adherence to building codes. |
| What is a plan view? | Look at it as if you are looking down at a drawing that shows the layout details like walls, doors, windows, and room dimensions. |
| What is an elevation? | It shows the height, finishes and vertical features of a structure. An example would be a 3 story building. |
| Describe what is a section? | It shows the interior details of how parts are built internally such as layers, heights and structural details. |
| jWhat should you do if you do not recognize a symbol or abbreviation? | Check the legend/key notes on the sheet and the general notes/specifications. |
| What information is provided on a site plan? | Property lines, setbacks, building footprint, grading/drainage, driveways/parking, utilities, and north arrows. |
| Explain what work is included when clearing a building site? | Removing trees/brush, debris, topsoil. This prepares the area for grading/excavation per the plan. |
| Why is it important to have retaining walls for on-site drawings? | Retaining walls hold back soil where grade changes. It is imperative the wall is built according to the designer's plan to prevent erosion. |
| What does a floor plan typically show? | Room layout, wall locations, |
| What work is included in clearing a building site? | Removing of vegetation, unwanted items, stripping of topsoil, rough grading prep, and erosion controls. |
| What do symbols/notes on a site plan tell you about utilities? | Utility type, routing, sizes/materials, structures/components, elevation/slope information, and whether utilities currently exist or new. |
| What retaining wall information is commonly shown on site/civil/landscape drawings? | Location, length, height, material and drainage notes. You will also see the inclusion of steps, trees, planters, fences, etc. |
| Where can you identify the roof type in a plan set? | Roof plan and exterior elevations. |
