Energy review
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Energy | The capacity to do work or produce change. |
| Energy Transformation | The process of changing energy from one form to another (e.g., potential to kinetic). |
| Law of Conservation of Energy | Scientific rule stating that energy cannot be created or destroyed, only transformed or transferred. |
| Kinetic Energy | The energy of motion; anything moving possesses this energy |
| Potential Energy | Stored energy based on an object's position, composition, or condition. |
| Mechanical Energy: | The sum of an object’s kinetic and potential energy; the energy of position and motion. |
| Chemical Energy | Energy stored in the bonds of atoms and molecules, released during chemical reactions (e.g., food, batteries, fuel). |
| Thermal Energy | The internal energy of a substance due to the random movement of its atoms and molecules. |
| Electrical Energy | Energy delivered by tiny charged particles called electrons, moving through a conductor. |
| Radiant Energy | Electromagnetic energy that travels in transverse waves (e.g., sunlight, X-rays). |
| Nuclear Energy | Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom, released by splitting (fission) or joining (fusion) atoms |
| Gravitational Potential Energy | Energy stored in an object due to its height above the ground. |
| Elastic Energy | Potential energy stored in objects that can be stretched or compressed (e.g., springs, rubber bands). |
| Sound Energy | The movement of energy through substances in longitudinal waves, produced by vibrations. |
| Photosynthesis | A process that transforms radiant energy (light) into chemical energy (glucose). |
| Generator | A machine that transforms kinetic energy (mechanical work) into electrical energy |
| Friction | A force that opposes motion, often converting kinetic energy into wasted thermal energy. |
| Efficiency | A measure of how much useful energy is produced compared to the total energy input. |
| Combustion | A chemical reaction that converts chemical energy (fuel) into thermal and radiant energy. |
| electric Motor | A device that transforms electrical energy into kinetic/mechanical energy. |
