| Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) | natural or man made chemicals that can mimic or block the body’s hormones, affecting the functioning of the endocrine system. |
| Environmental disasters | a catastrophic event occurring in the natural environment resulting from some form of human activity (as opposed to natural disaster). |
| Environmental remediation | the clean up, treatment, and removal of hazardous substances, pollutants, and contaminants from the environment and restoration of the natural parts of the environment within the clean up area. |
| Forever chemicals | informal name for the class of chemicals called polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs). They can persist for an extremely long length of time in the environment. |
| Nanoplastic (microplastic) | plastic particles less than 1 um across that form from the breakdown of larger plastic pieces. Nano and micro plastics can be small enough to enter the tissues of even very small organisms. |
| Nuclear accidents (pollution) persistent organic pollutants (POPs) | accidents involving nuclear or radioactive material, usually as a result of breach of containment. |
| Oil spill | Loss of containment of a volume of oil into the environment. This may be from the breach of a transport vessel, pipeline, or well head |
| Photochemical smog | Hazardous brownish-gray haze produced when sunlight interacts with nitrogen and carbon oxides and aromatic hydrocarbons near the ground. |
| Plastic pollution | The accumulation of waste plastic material in the environment and the negative environmental effects of this. |
| DDT | is a man-made insecticide and was first produced in the 1940s. In the past, it was widely used to control insect vectors carrying diseases such as malaria and typhus, and control agricultural insects pests |
| Desinfection | is the process of eliminating or reducing harmful microorganisms from inanimate objects and surfaces using chemical agents. |
| composting | is a simple way in which biodegradable waste, such as food scraps and garden waste, can be broken down and nutrients returned to the earth. |
| Recycling | The process of converting waste material into its constituent components that can then be used to remake new material. |
| Persistent organic pollutants (POPs): | organic compounds that are resistant to environmental degradation through chemical, biological, and photolytic processes. |
| Stratospheric ozone | Ozone (03) that exists in the stratosphere at about 20-25 kilometres above the Earth’s surface. |
| Waste management: | The processes involved in monitoring, collecting, handling, transport, and disposal of waste material to minimize its effect on the environment. |
