Great Depression A long period in the 1930s when the economy was very bad, many banks failed, and lots of people lost their jobs
Overproduction Making more goods (like crops or products) than people can buy.
Buying on the Margin Borrowing money to buy stocks, hoping their value will go up so you can pay back the loan and make a profit.
Stock Market Crash When stock prices suddenly drop very fast, causing people to lose a lot of money.
Dust Bowl A time in the 1930s when severe drought and poor farming caused huge dust storms in the Great Plains.
Unemployment When people who want jobs cannot find work.
Relief Immediate help given to people in need, like food, money, or shelter
Recovery Efforts to improve the economy and get people working again.
Reform Changes made to fix problems and prevent them from happening again.
New Deal A group of programs and laws created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt to help people during the Great Depression
Social Security A government program that provides money to older adults, people with disabilities, and others in need.
Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) A New Deal program that gave young men jobs working on environmental projects like planting trees and building parks.
Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) A New Deal program that built dams to control flooding, provide electricity, and create jobs in the Tennessee Valley.
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) A government agency that protects people’s bank deposits so they don’t lose their money if a bank fails.
