| predator | An organism that hunts and eats other animals |
| prey | An organism that is hunted |
| herbivore | An organism that eats only plants |
| carnivore | An organism that eats only animals |
| omnivore | An organism that eats both plants and animals |
| food web | The overlapping food chains in an ecosystem |
| flow of energy | The movement of energy from one organism to another organism in a food web |
| endangered | When a species is in danger of becoming extinct |
| extinct | When a species has died out completely |
| overpopulation | Too many of one type of organism that uses up resources in an area |
| deforestation | The removal of trees from a large area |
| invasive species | A non-native species that can harm the environment |

| adaptation | an inherited trait or learned behavior that helps an organism survive in its surroundings |
