| wergild | the amount paid by a wrongdoer to the family of the person he or she injured or killed |
| ordeal | determining guilt in Germanic law based on the idea of divine intervention |
| Gregory I | a strong pope who strengthened the power of the papacy (office of the pope) in the sixth century |
| monk | a man who separates himself from ordinary society to dedicate himself to God |
| monasticism | the practice of living the life of a monk |
| Saint Benedict | in the sixth century, he wrote a set of rules to guide a community of monks he founded |
| missionaries | people sent out to carry a religious message to non-Christian people |
| Charlemagne | a powerful Frankish king and grandson of Charles Martel, who was a wise supporter of learning |
| feudalism | a new political and social order duing the middle ages where a powerful lord gave protection in return for service |
| vassal | a man who served a lord in a military capacity |
| knight | heavily armored cavalry (army) with great social prestige |
| Magyars | people from western Asia who moved into central Europe at the end of the ninth century and settled in Hungary |
| Normandy | a section of land in France at the mouth of the Seine River given to the Vikings in 911 |
| chivalry | an idea of civilized behavior and code of ethics that Knights were to uphold |
| fief | a grant of land made to a vassal |
