| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| compound | pure substance made of two or more elements in a fixed ratio |
| octect rule | atoms gain, lose, or share electrons to achieve a full outer shell and a noble gas configuration |
| ionic bond | electrostatic attraction between cations and anions |
| electronegativity | a measure of an atom's ability to attract electrons from the other atom in a bond |
| non-polar covalent bond | a covalent bond in which both atoms share the electrons equally |
| polar covalent bond | a covalent bond in which electrons are more strongly attracted to the more electronegative atom |
| diatomic element | elements in nature that are found as two atoms bonded together |
| bond energy | the amount of energy required to break a bond |
| bond length | the distance between the nuclei of two bonded atoms |
| single bond | two electrons shared between atoms |
| double bond | four electrons shared between atoms |
| triple bond | six electrons shared between atoms |
| bonding pair | two electrons (one from each atom) that are shared in a covalent bond |
| lone pair | valence electrons of an atom that are not involved in bonding |
| covalent bonding network | a large covalent substance like diamond or graphite with many atoms covalently bonded |
| formula unit | the smallest collection of ions that results in a neutral charge |
| molecule | a single, free-standing unit of atoms that are covalently bonded |
| crystal structure | symmetrical, 3-D arrangement of ions in an ionic compound |
| polyatomic ion | a charged group of covalently bonded atoms |
| metallic bond | a delocalized sea of electrons that move freely between the atoms of a metal |
| ductility | the ability to be drawn into a wire |
| malleability | the ability to be hammered into a thin sheet |
| expanded valence | An atom that will include d orbital electrons in bonding causing it to have more than an octet of electrons once bonded |
