Power and conflict - London

Connotations of London as a title ~very powerful city ~massive sense of space suggests that it will tackle large societal issues
Connotations of “charted” in London ~suggests they are controlled ~ Thames of London (nature) could also show it being controlled and contained
Connotations of “mark” in London ~repetition suggests that the people are without power lack control over own circumstances ~ metaphor that suggests that it’s a brand and has a permanent impact on all
Connotations of “appalls “ in London ~ dismay/horror ~ reflects lack of action from the church and how Blake and others would view it as lacking morality ~ Also juxtaposes purity and love expected by the religious community
Connotations of “in every” in London ~ repetition used to show the extent of suffering
Connotations of “youthful harlots curse “ in London ~ Blake is corrupting the idea of childbirth with sexual exploitation and hate “curse”. ~ Shows that infants will be born into a broken world
What does the cyclidalic structure imply ? This suggests that the suffering is never ending and torrential.
What does the iambic pentameter imply ? Shows order and control as consistency of a rhythm provides a sense of relentless oppression.
What does the HEAR imply ? The auditory signs of suffering throughout the poem which implies that Blake wants the reader to start listening to the signs of suffering around them in London - calling for recognition of society issues and ills
What is the poem about ? Centres from a first persons perspective who is walking through the streets of London and commenting on the filth , corruption and oppression he sees ( child labour, Monachil abuse and prostitution.
What is some context about Blake ? He was firm believe of woman’s rights and even taught his wife to read who then became his business partner unofficially.
How is it written ? It is short and obvious in its criticisms of the authorities which have allowed the oppression and corruption of London.
