TermDefinition
The Odyssey the second major story attributed to Homer. Historians doubt if both it and the Iliad were written by the same author because of the difference in writing style. Tells the story of Odysseus' journey back home after the Trojan war.
Millman Parry Stated that the Odyssey had been passed down by oral tradition before Homer wrote it down. Cited it's Epic conventions, Epithets, Extended Similes, long lists, and Aretê
Epithet an epic convention. Adjective phrases used to describe something along side it's name/title. ex: gray-eyed Athena, rosy-fingered dawn.
Extended Simile an epic convention. would sometimes go on for a full page of text.
Aretê Greek for virtue or excellence
Iliad vs Odyssey One story ties Aretê more to physical prowess in combat, the other ties Aretê to knowledge and cleverness in combat. One is much more about men and war, the other is more about domestic issues and is about both men and women. Different views of the gods.
In medias res to start a story in the middle of the course of events.
How does the Odyssey open? With Penelope home in Ithaka.
Ithaka Odysseus' home country and setting for half the story.
Penelope Odysseus' wife and queen of Ithaka. Over the 20 years Odysseus has been gone, she hasn't lost hope that he will return. Has been warding off suitors by telling them she needs to finish weaving her mourning tapestry first. Unweaves her progress every night
The 108 suitors Men that take advantage of and live in the palace, exploiting the kingdom and abusing Telemachus while Odysseus has been away
Telemachus Son of Odysseus and Penelope. Wants to chase off the suitors but doesn't have the power to on his own.
Athena and Telemachus She goes to him disguised as an old lady and tells him to go find news about his father. He goes to Menelaus and Nestor. They treat him with a respect the suitors have never shown him, starts to build his confidence.
Calypso (Kalypso) A beautiful nymph Odysseus is stuck on the island of at the start of the Odyssey.
Where Odysseus' part of the story starts On an island with Calypso. He has lost all his men and ships, and is basically stranded. He's been here 7 years. Finally asks Hermes to help, constructs a raft and leaves.
Scheria home of the Phaeacians and where Odysseus washes up after Calypso.
Phaeacians inhabitants of Scheria.
Nausikaä The princess of the Phaeacians. Received a dream from Athena to wash her clothes at the shore. She and her servants find Odysseus washed up there. Her servants are scared but shes interested. gives him clothes and tells him to come to town after her.
Alkinoös father of Nausikaä and king of the Phaeacians. Setting up an athletic event when Odysseus shows up. Invites him to play. Another man insults Odysseus, so he has to show off in discus. does so cool he gets invited to the Palace.
Demodocus an oral poet singing in the court. First sings of Ares and Aphrodite. when Odysseus goes to leave, he sings a song about the Trojan Horse. Odysseus is moved to tears and Alkinoös asks him whats wrong. Odysseus tells how he ended up here.
Themes of the Odyssey Physical dangers and temptations, Telemachus' maturity.
Kikonians the 1st stop of Odysseus and his men after the Trojan war was the land of this group. Odysseus' men decided to raid them and a few of his men were killed. They managed to take barrels of their very potent wine with them.
Lotus Eaters 2nd stop of Odysseus and his men. Zeus made them end up there because of the raid. A group of hippies that eat lotus. The lotus represents lethargy and apathy. Odysseus abstains but his men dont. He has to force them back onto the ship.
Island of Xenia 3rd stop of Odysseus and his men. home of giant cyclops and Polyphemus. Odysseus wants a welcome gift so goes to Polyphemus and asks for it. He instead eats 2 of his men and traps them in his cave with a big rock. eats 6 men total
Polyphemus a giant cyclops and son of Poseidon. A very loving shepherd
Odysseus vs Polyphemus Odysseus has a plan. Tells Polyphemus his name is nobody. apologies + gets him drunk on the Kikonian wine. When he passes out stabs him in the eye. When Polyphemus wakes up he screams that "nobody is hurting me" so no other cyclopes come to help.
Odysseus and his men escape Polyphemus Polyphemus goes to let his sheep out of the cave, so moves the boulder. Is petting the sheep as they walk out. Odysseus and his men cling to the bottoms of his sheep to sneak through. Polyphemus realizes and chases them to the shore.
Odysseus gets cursed by Poseidon Odysseus is too cocky as he leaves the shore of Xenia. Shouts out to Polyphemus "You've been bested by Odysseus!" Since Polyphemus now knows his name, can ask Poseidon to curse him.
