Why did farmers want the value of money decreased by the free coinage of silver? (what was the benefit?) They wanted inflation. if value of money decreased, prices of crops would rise.
What were some of the issues that the populist party supported? which ones became a reality? government owned railroads and telegraphs, income tax, direct election of senators
Why did labor unions form and what did they want? protect workers - they wanted better wages, shorter workdays, safer working conditions
what does the pacific begin to associate with unions that limited their effectiveness? Violence, radicals, socialism
Who did the government typically side with in disputes between labor and management? Management
How were "new immigrants" between 1890 and 1915 different from old immigrants? New Immigrants - Southern and Eastern Europe (Italy, Russia, Poland). Catholic and Jewish Old immigrants - Northern and Western Europe, protestant
Where did most new immigrants to the U.S. settle in the late 1800's? Large cities (New York and Chicago), ethnic neighborhoods
What were unions advocating for and what was their main tool in achieving their goals? Better pay, shorter hours, safer working conditions
What strategies did capitalists use to fight striking workers? Blacklists, lockouts, hiring Scabs and Pinkertons
What were the causes of Urbanization in America in the late 1800's? Industrial revolution, more immigrants, farming machines (made farming easier and farmers lost jobs and had to move to cities)
Describe the migration patterns of farmers and African Americans in the late 1800's? Moved from rural areas to cities for factory work. Some moved North and midwest to avoid Jim Crow laws and for better job opportunities
What was different about new immigrants and old immigrants and how did that cause problems for new immigrants? Differences in language, religion, and customs made it hard for them to adjust and they were discriminated against
What are political machines/Boss systems and what did they do? Corrupt organizations that controlled finances and politics, usually by providing help and services in exchange for votes.
How did the Boss system help lead to greater Nativism in U.S. cities? Boss system relied on immigrant votes, so Americans blamed immigrants for the corruption.
What was the purpose of the Pendleton Act? To end "spoils system" by requiring government jobs be based on merit rather than politics.
List and discribe problems in cities caused by urbanization? Overcrowding, sanitation, crime, fire risk
