1. What was cause of the Indian Wars? White settlers moved west and wanted Indian territory. Railroad expansion helped with this.
What was the purpose of the Dawes Act? To force Native Americans to be more like White people, and to take their land.
What things did the US government do to eliminate the threat of Indians in the war? Military force, putting them on reservations, eliminating buffalo
What was the importance of the Battle of Little Big Horn? Wounded Knee? Little Big Horn - Indians won and killed all American troops, it was their last stand. Wounded Knee - end of Indian wars, they were defeated.
How did the Homestead Act encourage settlement in the west? It gave free land (160 acres) to any citizen who agreed to move out west.
How did the Transcontinental Railroad change the U.S.? How did it change domestic trade? Faster travel and communication - improved trade because goods could be exchanged faster and cheaper.
How did the Pacific Railway Act pay for the construction of the Transcontinental Railway? Land grants
List several policies that the U.S. used to support economic development in the late 1800's? Tariffs, land grants to railroads, open immigration policies, national banking system.
Why did America have Open Door Policy and how did it help? Needed people for cheap labor for factories and mines. It helped industries and cities grow.
What were the factors that contributed to U.S. economic growth in the 1800's Natural resources, inventions, immigrants (Labor supply), and government support for businesses
What economic system does the U.S. utilize to provide opportunity and wealth to citizens? Capitalization - Free enterprise
What is Social Darwinism? rich were wealthy because they were superior
How did the philosophy of Social Darwinism support monopolistic actions? Eliminate competition, dominating the market, survival of the fittest
What are the economic consequences of Monopolies? Reduced competition, high prices, lower quality
What is laissez-faire capitalism and how did it help lead to growth of monopolies? government doesn't interfere in economy. They can do whatever they want
Why were men like Carnegie, Rockefeller, and Morgan seen as both captains of industry and robber barons? They created jobs, expanded markets, and helped others (usually the rich. They were also seen as ruthless and corrupt, exploited their workers and corrupted politics.
What is the difference between horizontal and vertical integration? Horizontal - buying out all competing companies in same industry. -(buying all the oil refineries Vertical - Buying all the companies at different stages - (buying the iron mines, ships, steel mills, etc.)
What is Sherman Anti-trust and was it effective? First federal law to limit cartels and monopolies. NOT effective at first - it was used against labor unions other than the big corporations.
How and why did agricultural production change in the late 1800's? Machines - steel plow, reaper, and thresher - much easier to farm and cultivate crops faster. Westward expansion - Homestead act gave land to people to move out west.
What effect did increased production have on crop prices? Overproduction - too many crops made prices fall
