Drama Terms - Eng9

TermDefinition
Aside Words spoken, usually in an undertone not intended to be heard by all characters -short / quick -used for comedic effect
Comic Relief When humor is injected into a serious play to relieve the heavy tension of tragic events
Couplet Two lines written in Iambic Pentameter -often reveals a theme
Dramatic Irony Occurs when the audience or reader is aware of something important, of which the characters in the story are NOT aware of
Enjambment The continuation of a thought or sentence without a pause past the end of a line, couplet, or stanza
Foil character who shows another character's qualities by being different
Foot A certain number of stressed & unstressed symbols -unit for measuring meter
Hyperbole An exaggeration to make a point
Iambic Pentameter A line composed of ten syllables, arranged in five metrical feet, each with an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable
Meter A pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables -number of times that a poetic foot appears in a line
Monologue Long speech made by one character aimed at one or all the characters present in the scene
Oxymoron A figure of speech that combines two words or phrases with opposite meanings
Parallelism when parts of a sentence are written the same way. (structure or meaning)
Pun A type of joke that plays with the different meanings of a word or words that sound similar but have different meanings. -It is often used to create a humorous or clever effect.
Quatrain A four line stanza
Soliloquy -Long speech made by one character alone on stage -Builds suspense -Dramatic irony -Character's inner thoughts
Sonnet -14 line poem written in iambic pentameter
Tragedy A serious play or drama that typically deals with problems of a central character, ultimately leading to an unhappy ending.
Tragic Flaw weakness in a character that leads to their downfall (problems)
Tragic Hero A character who starts out in a position of power or respect but suffers a downfall because of a tragic flaw.
