| active listening | characterized by focusing fully on what the speaker is saying, verbally and nonverbally |
| asking questions | request clarification and additional information |
| barriers | sometimes block communication. EX: language differences, cultural influences, defense mechanisms, physical distractions, sensory impairments, medication effects and pain |
| clinical depression | a mood disorder that causes persistent feelings of sadness and loss of interest |
| closed-ended questions | can respond simply with a yes or no |
| communication | process in which messages are exchanged between a sender and a receiver |
| feedback | method used to check understanding of what is said |
| health literacy | the ability to obtain, process, and understand basic health information and services needed to make appropriate health decisions |
| leading questions | all or part of the answer is included in the wording of the question |
| learning objectives | setting educational goals |
| nonverbal communication | tone of voice, body language, gestures, facial expressions, touch, and physical appearance/ most accurate expression of what the sender truly feels and believes |
| open-ended questions | cannot be answered simply with a yes or no, requires a more complete response and are used to encourage patients to provide more detailed information or explanations |
| pantomime | body movements that convey ideas or actions, can communicate when speaking is not possible or when the patient does not understand english |
| paraphrasing | the receiver rewords the sender's message in the receiver's own words and then asks the sender for confirmation |
| probing questions | requests for additional information or clarification |
| receiver | listener |
| reflecting | prompts the receiver to either complete or add more detail to the original message |
| requesting examples | asking for examples can help to more clearly explain and fill in meaning |
